MLAX: Four Gryphons Named 2021 CUFLA All-Canadians

GUELPH, Ont. - Following an outstanding 2021 season from the Guelph Gryphons men's lacrosse team, in which the Gryphons came agonizingly close to capturing the sixth national title in program history, a total of four student-athletes from the University of Guelph's men's lacrosse team have been named CUFLA (Canadian University Men's Lacrosse Association) All-Canadians.

Fifth-year attack, Michael Berger, ends his Gryphon career with CUFLA West Division All-Canadian honours after a standout 2021 season for the Gryphs. The Uxbridge, Ontario native, who majors in the criminal justice at the Unviersity of Guelph, racked up 9 goals during the 2021 regular season to go along with 4 assists. In the playoffs, Berger continued to step up for Guelph, adding 12 goals and 4 assists in 4 games played, helping the Gryphons reach the Baggataway Cup championship game, where they would fall just short in a 10-9 loss to the Brock Badgers. Berger was selected to the All-Baggataway Cup Team for his performance at nationals in North Bay. Michael Berger's outstanding U of G career ends with the Uxbridge native having been named a CUFLA All-Canadian in each of his four seasons of on-field action with the Gryphons. 

Leading the way defensively all season for the Gryphons men's lacrosse team was Mitchell Ogilvie, who earns CUFLA All-Canadian honours at both midfield and defensive midfield. The Peterborough native not only set the tone defensively for the Gryphons but also contributed in attack, adding 5 goals in the regular season before taking his game to another level in the playoffs where the accounting major added 8 goals and 6 assists in 4 postseason games.  Also helping lead the way in what was a dominant defensive showing by the Gryphons in 2021 was Matthew Sykes. The fifth-year longstick from Oakville has been a key contributor for the Gryphons defence in each of the past three seasons, with the sociology major regularly causing turnovers and shutting down opposing attacks throughout the 2021 campaign. Rounding out the Gryphons list of 2021 CUFLA All-Canadians is standout goalie, Cameron MacLeod who posted an incredible 67.3% save percentage in his first year as the Gryphons starting goalie. The human kinetics major from Georgetown, Ontario also pulled off an extremely rare feat in men's field lacrosse, posting a shutout in the season-opening victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks en route to being named BioSteel Gryphon Athlete of the Week.
