ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – An undefeated 2024 season for the Guelph Gryphons men's lacrosse team came to an end on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) in St. Catharines, with the Gryphons losing 11-8 to the Queen's Gaels in a semifinal matchup at the 2024 Baggataway Cup.
The Gryphons were able to start off the semifinal match with a solid opening quarter, taking an early 2-1 lead with goals from
Liam Aston and Robbie Baxter. However, the second period would not be as kind to Guelph, as the Gaels scored three goals in the second frame while keeping Gryphs off the scoreboard to take a 4-2 lead into the half. Guelph would trim the deficit down to 6-5 in the third, but three straight goals from Queen's in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter would extend the lead to four. The Gryphons would attempt to mount a comeback, scoring twice in quick succession, but the deficit to open the quarter was too much to overcome. The loss sees the Gryphons undefeated 2024 season come to an end after entering the Baggataway Cup semifinals on an 11-game winning streak. Guelph was the top seed in the CUFLA West division with a 10-0 regular season record.
The Queen's Gaels advances to the 2024 Baggataway Cup final where they will take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon (1pm).
