GUELPH, ON – Two current members of the Guelph Gryphons men's varsity lacrosse team were selected in the 2016 N.L.L. (National Lacrosse League) Entry Draft which took place on Monday, September 26.
Justin Martin and
Kevin Orleman were both taken by the Buffalo Bandits during the 2nd round. It was a record day for Canadian university players being drafted, as Martin and Orelman were two of six CUFLA (Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association) players to be selected in the 2016 N.L.L. Entry Draft.
Justin Martin: 2nd round, 15th overall – Buffalo Bandits
Justin Martin, a third year Management, Economics and Finance major, is in his second season with the Gryphons men's lacrosse program. During his first season in the red, black and gold, Martin was named an All-Canadian at longstick while establishing himself as one of the toughest defencemen in Canadian University lacrosse. The Oakville native is described by Gryphons head coach Sam Kosakowski as a quiet leader with an unmatched work ethic.
Martin plays defence/transition in box lacrosse where he played for the Burlington Chiefs Jr. A program. He also played in seven games with the Oakville Rock this past summer in the M.S.L. (Major Series Lacrosse).
Kevin Orelman: 2nd round, 18th overall – Buffalo Bandits
Despite being in his third year as a student at U of G, the 2016 season marks Kevin Orelman's first year with the Gryphons men's lacrosse team. Kevin was drafted as a goaltender by the Buffalo Bandits, but has excelled as a face off specialist and longstick defencemen with the Gryphons. Orelman has won nearly 70% of his draws and is quickly establishing himself as one of the league's top face off men. Gryphons head coach Sam Kosakowski says, "Kevin brings a level of maturity and experience to our squad that makes everyone around him a better player."
Kevin plays goalie in box lacrosse where he has suited up for both the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves as well as the Delta Islanders of the B.C. Jr. A league.
