GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series. Casey Harkley and Tyler Barry (men's wrestling) and Teghan MacRae (women's hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering February 23 to March 1, 2026.

Gryphon wrestlers, Casey Harkley & Tyler Barry, with U SPORTS gold medals at the 2026 Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Wrestling Invitational Championships
Casey Harkley and Tyler Barry earn 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' honours after taking home gold in their weight class at the 2026 Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships in Thunder Bay.

Casey Harkley, a second-year student-athlete from Guelph, made his presence known at last year's championships as a freshman, winning a national gold medal in the men's 68kg while being named U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. The management economics and finance major once again earned his spot in the gold medal match at this year's wrestling nationals by going undefeated through his first four matches over the two days of competition. Harkley matched up against Brock's Gabe Blanchette in the gold medal match, with Harkley jumping out to an early 5-0 lead before his opponent scored 8 unanswered points to take an 8-5 lead. With the match winding down, Harkley made one last stand, scoring a crucial two-point takedown with :38 seconds remaining, followed by an additional late point with :05 seconds remaining to tie the match at 8-8. Harkley would win the match and the gold medal in the men's 68kg by decision as he recorded two-point takedowns on three separate occasions in the match (compared to just two for Blanchette), giving Harkley U SPORTS gold in back-to-back years.

For the second time this season, third-year wrestler Tyler Barry has been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week.' The Milton native competes in the men's 72kg weight class for the Gryphons wrestling team. Barry qualified for the gold medal match with an unblemished 4-0 record in his matches over the two days. The arts major took on Western's Chayton Valleau as he seized control of the match in the 2nd period, taking a 9-1 lead with a 4-point take down and a 2-point takedown. Barry would hold off the late charge from his opponent to earn the 9-7 victory to cap off his outstanding season with a national gold medal. Barry entered the championships as an OUA silver medalist, and in his second appearance at wrestling nationals, the arts major reached the podium for the first time in his varsity career, taking top spot on the podium as the 2026 national champion in the men's 72kg.

Teghan MacRae (Women's Hockey)
Teghan MacRae celebrates triple OT winner vs Waterloo in OUA quarters
Teghan MacRae is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' following her heroics for the Gryphons women's hockey team in their OUA quarterfinal series against the Waterloo Warriors. MacRae, a fifth-year defender, was on the ice for two of her team's biggest goals of the season in Game 3 on Sunday (March 1). With her team trailing 2-1 in the 3rd period, MacRae was on the ice when her partner on defence, Arielle MacDonald, scored on a wrister to tie up the game. The decisive Game 3 of the best-of-three series would go into multiple overtimes until the 15:27 mark in the third overtime period. With her team making a line change in the offensive zone, the neuroscience major fired a wrister from the point that picked the top corner of the net to clinch the game and the series for the Gryphons. For the Cooksville, Ontario native, the goal was her third of the season (including postseason) with one of her two regular season goals also coming against the Waterloo Warriors (Jan. 28). MacRae in her five seasons with Guelph has 8 career goals with her 8th sending her team into the 2026 OUA semifinals. MacRae and the rest of the Gryphons women's hockey team will face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, the No. 5-seed from the OUA East, in the semifinals with the best-of-three series starting on Wednesday night (March 4) with Game 1 taking place from the Gryphon Centre.
