Abby Warriner (Field Hockey) and Olivier Ciarlo (Men's Hockey) Named Gryph’s Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE

GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series. Abby Warriner (field hockey) and Olivier Ciarlo (men's hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering September 29 to October 5, 2025.

Abby Warriner (Field Hockey)

Abby Warriner of the Gryphons field hockey team is this week's 'Athlete of the Week' as she was a major contributor to her team's weekend home-and-home sweep over the McMaster Marauders. Warriner, the fifth-year midfielder and reigning OUA MVP and U SPORTS Player of the Year, showed why she is regarded as one of the best players in the country. On Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) in Hamilton, the Newmarket, ON native had two goals in her team's 4-0 win over the Marauders, including the game's opening goal in the 31st minute. Warriner continued her goal scoring prowess the following day at home where she scored in the 53rd minute helping her side to another 4-0 win over McMaster. The biomedical engineering major has now scored in three straight games for her team and has 5 goals on the season. Warriner and the Gryphons field hockey team are back in action for a pair of home games at the Gryphon Soccer Complex this week when they host the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night (Oct. 8) and the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11).

Olivier Ciarlo (Men's Hockey)

It was an impressive Gryphon debut in net for men's hockey rookie, Olivier Ciarlo, who takes home this week's 'Athlete of the Week' honours. Ciarlo, a first-year goalie on the Gryphons men's hockey team, started both of his team's games in Thunder Bay over the weekend and played a major role in both Gryphon road wins over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Making his first career OUA start on Friday night (Oct. 3), the arts major was magnificent stopping 30 of the 32 shots sent his way in the game, including 10 saves in the final period to earn his first win as a Gryphon in Guelph's 5-2 season-opening win. The Laval, Quebec native was back in the Gryphon net the following night (Oct. 4) and was a major reason why his team left Thunder Bay with a rare road sweep of the Thunderwolves. Ciarlo made 29 saves, including 21 in the final two periods, in the face of some heavy Lakehead pressure en route to guiding his team to a 3-2 win. Ciarlo and the Gryphons men's hockey team (2-0-0) are back home at the Gryphon Centre Arena for the first time this season when they host Waterloo Warriors in their home opener on Thursday night (Oct. 9) in their only game this week.
