Gryphon Playoff Preview (Feb. 22 - 26, 2023): Seven Gryphon Varsity Teams in Playoff Action This Week

GUELPH, Ont. - A total of seven Guelph Gryphon varsity teams are in provincial and national playoff action this week (Feb. 22 - 26). See below for details as our Gryphon men's and women's basketball, women's hockey, nordic skiing, track & field, swimming, and wrestling teams all gear up for OUA & U SPORTS Championship season. 
 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Gryphons (16-6) women's basketball team is set to host the York Lions (9-13) in the opening round of the 2023 OUA playoffs. In their only meeting during the regular season the Gryphons took an 82-72 win thanks to a dominant fourth quarter. With a win, the Gryphons would go on to face the McMaster Marauders (17-5) in Hamilton on Saturday, who the Gryphons also defeated in their only matchup of the regular season, 82-73.

The U of G men's basketball team (11-11) will make the trip up north to Thunder Bay to face off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (16-6) in the first round of the OUA playoffs. The Gryphons and Thunderwolves met in the opening game of the 2022-23 regular season, with Lakehead earning a 91-77 win, but the Gryphons enter the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the conferece, having won 8 of their last 10 games. The winner of Wednesday's game in Thunder Bay will go on to face the Windsor Lancers (16-6) on Saturday in Windsor.

The U SPORTS No. 10-ranked Guelph Gryphons (18-4-5) women's hockey team is set to drop the puck against the Windsor Lancers (15-11-1) in the quarterfinal round of the 2022-23 McCaw Cup Playoffs. Following the conclusion of the opening round the Gryphons, along with the 3 other remaining teams, will be re-seeded to determine semifinal matchups. 
 

NORDIC SKIING


2023 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships

The Gryphon varsity nordic skiing team heads to Huntsville for the 2023 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships this weekend looking to improve upon their 2022 results. The Gryphons women's team will be led by second-year human kinetics major Julia Shannon who led the Gryphons at the 2022 nordic skiing championships. On the men's side, Oro Medonte native Alec MacLean looks to spearhead the Gryphon effort after a Top 10 finish at last year's provincial championships. 

"The team has shown great perseverance this season, training hard despite the challenging weather conditions for skiing locally," says Gryphon nordic skiing head coach Oliver Conway-White. "We look forward to a great OUA championships and the opportunity to put all the hardwork into practice."

The No. 1-ranked track & field team in the nation heads to Windsor this weekend looking to sweep the provincial banners for the sixth straight year. The women's team will be looking for their 7th consecutive OUA title, while the men will be hoping to return home with their 6th.
 

SWIMMING

2023 U SPORTS Swimming Championships

Thursday, February 23 - Saturday, February 25, 2023

After a strong showing at the OUA Championships two weeks ago, the Gryphon swimming team will be looking to continue their sucess into nationals as they head out west for the 2023 U SPORTS Swimming Championships. Seven student-athletes will head to Victoria to represent the Gryphons on the national stage as they compete against the best collegiate swimmers in the nation.

After reaching the provincial podium six times two weeks ago at the provincial championships, the Guelph Gryphons wrestling team will head to Alberta for the 2023 OUA Wrestling Championships. 11 student athletes will make the trip out west, including all six OUA medalists.
