Gryphon Playoff Preview: Three Gryphon Teams in Action During Final Week of Competition for 2021-22 Varsity Season

Gryphon Track & Field, Wrestling and Figure Skating wrap up their 2021-22 seasons this week

GUELPH, Ont. – A total of three Guelph Gryphon varsity teams will be in action this week (March 29-April 2) as the 2021-22 collegiate season comes to a close. The Gryphon track and field teams are off to New Brunswick looking to defend their national titles, while the Gryphon wrestling and figure skating teams wrap up their seasons at the OUA Championships.

2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships

Thursday, March 31 - Saturday, April 2, 2022

The Gryphons track and field program is off to Saint John, New Brunswick this weekend with the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships hosted by UNB and taking place at Irving Oil Fieldhouse. Zoe Sherar running indoor trackIn total, 52 student-athletes (26 men, 26 women) will make the trip to Atlantic Canada, as the Gryphon men look for a fifth straight national title, while the U of G women look to capture a fourth straight U SPORTS banner. Action gets underway Thursday afternoon (March 31) and wraps up late Saturday afternoon (April 2). The Gryphon track and field teams head to nationals fresh off of a dominating performance at the OUA Track and Field Championships, where the Gryphons swept team titles while racking up 31 trips to the OUA podium. Leading the way for the Gryphons into the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships are a pair of standout athletes who will be looking to defend their U SPORTS gold medals from two years ago. Mark Bujnowski, a fifth-year agricultural science major, heads to nationals as the reigning gold medalist in both men's shot put and weight throw. On the women's side, Zoe Sherar will look to repeat as the U SPORTS gold medalist in the women's 300m after claiming national gold two years ago in Edmonton.

2022 OUA Wrestling Curling Championships

Bob Davis Gymnasium, Brock University | St. Catharines, ON 

A total of 14 student-athletes from the Guelph Gryphons varsity wrestling program will make their way to St. Catharines on Saturday for the 2022 OUA Wrestling Championships. With nationals being cancelled this season for U SPORTS wrestling, Saturday's one-day event at Brock's Bob David Gymnasium marks a season-culminating tournament for our U of G wrestlers. Eight student-athletes from the Gryphons men's wrestling team will compete, while on the women's side, four student-athletes from the Gryphons women's wrestling team will be in action. Simon ChavesLeading the way on the men's side is two-sport athlete, Simon Chaves. Chaves, a criminal justice major who also plays defensive back with the Gryphon football team, will compete in the men's 90kg weight class and will look to return to the OUA podium for the first time since his rookie year in 2018 (where he won bronze in the men's 90kg). Chaves, who recently attended the CFL Ontario regional combine, has impressed in limited action on the wrestling mat this season, earning top spot at the Western Invitational on March 20 (his lone wrestling event this season) without having a single point scored on him.
 
On the women's side, second-year student-athlete Amelia Frisbee leads the way for the Gryphons (women's 76kg). Frisbee is currently in her second year of studies (biological and medical physics), but her first year of OUA wrestling competition as a result of last season being cancelled due to the pandemic. Prior to arriving at the University of Guelph, the London, Ontario native was a two-time OFSAA wrestling champion in high school (A.B. Lucas Secondary School) and also earned the title of U-19 national champion.
 
Wrestling action on Saturday gets underway at 10am, with finals wrapping up later that day around 2pm.

2022 OUA Figure Skating Championships

RECAP

A total of 23 student-athletes from the Guelph Gryphons varsity figure skating team will be heading to Aylmer, Ontario for a two-day conference championship event this week (March 29-30), as the McMaster Marauders host the 2022 OUA Figure Skating Championships. 2020 OUA Figure Skating Championships.The Gryphons will be one of nine universities from across the province in attendance at the East Elgin Community Complex, with Guelph just narrowly missing the podium two years ago at the 2020 OUA Figure Skating Championships where the team skated to a 4th-place finish. Helping lead the way for the Gryphons in 2022 is Laura Dawson, a third-year criminal justice major from Milton. Two years ago as a rookie, Dawson impressed, capping off her first season at the University of Guelph by taking home an OUA silver medal in the long program. Dawson has been named team captain for the 2021-22 season, and will look to once again secure a spot on the podium for the Gryphons. Another Gryphon to keep an eye on at this year's OUA Figure Skating Championships is Helene Carle, a real estate major from Georgetown. Carle is now in her second year of studies at the University of Guelph but will be making her OUA debut as a result of last season's cancellation. The Georgetown native will have her sights set on a podium finish in the novice short program, with Carle also pairing with Gryphon teammate Olivia Farrow in the senior free skate pairs event. Action gets underway Tuesday morning at 9am and wraps up Wednesday afternoon.
