TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons varsity skating team finished the 2019-20 season on a strong note in Toronto, finishing 4th out of nine schools at the 2020 OUA Figure Skating Championships. The two-day, conference championship event was hosted by Ryerson University, where the Gryphons were represented on the podium on four separate occasions over the course of two days at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The Toronto Varsity Blues made it five straight OUA titles, claiming 123 total points over the two-days. The Gryphons finished just three points back of a top three finish, with McMaster (50 points) narrowly edging the Gryphons (47 points) in the final team standings.
"Overall, the team skated well," said Gryphons head coach
Janet Gibson. "We were in a solid 3rd-place finishing spot, but at the last moment and in the last event, made a few errors that cost us the bronze medal. Our athletes had their sights set on the podium, so it was a disappointing finish, but hopefully this 4th-place finish will make them that much more driven next season and they will be sure to be on the podium in 2021."
Gryphon rookies
Colleen Black and
River Christiano impressed in their OUA debuts, earning the silver medal in the senior similar Dance pairs event.
Rookie
Laura Dawson produced perhaps her best performance of the season with a clean skate in the ladies long program, earning her an OUA silver medal. While fellow first-year
Misaki Ojiro skated her way to the podium as well with a bronze medal in the Novice women's short program. First-year Laura Dawson and third-year team captain
Olivia Stallaert won the bronze medal in the senior similar free skate pairs event.
