TORONTO, ON - Saturday afternoon in Toronto, the Gryphons Field Hockey team won 4-3 over the two-time defending OUA champion Varsity Blues. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 4-0 while Toronto sits at 3-1 on the season.
The Gryphons and Varsity Blues are THE two powers on OUA field hockey. There's no disputing that. The last 12 OUA banners have gone to either Guelph or Toronto, with the Varsity Blues owning conference bragging rights each of the last two seasons. However, on Saturday afternoon, it was the Gryphons who were able to make the first strong statement of the 2016 season by edging the Blues on their home field.
Guelph opened the scoring 10 minutes in with a goal from
Katherine MacMillan. After Toronto battled back to take a 2-1 lead at the half, the Gryphons would respond with a three-goal second half en route to the 4-3 victory.
Emily Hong,
Olivia Lane and
Olivia Finch would all find the back of the net for the Gryphons in the second half as they were able to hold off the Varsity Blues with Finch's decisive goal coming in the 70th minute of play.
The Gryphons will look to improve to 5-0 on Sunday when they once again will be in action in Toronto, this time against the McGill Martlets. Game time is set for 2:15pm on Sunday afternoon.
