TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team took home bronze medals from the 2026 OUA Field Hockey Championships, thanks to a 2-1 shootout win over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday (Oct. 25) at York University. It marked the third straight season in which the Gryphons and Warriors battle for a medal, with Guelph falling short in the OUA gold medal game in 2024 and the bronze medal game in 2025. But in 2026, it would be Guelph leaving with a spot on the podium, thanks to a hard-fought shootout win over the Warriors on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.
After falling behind 1-0 early on, the Gryphons fought back with a 2nd quarter goal from fourth-year human kinetics major,
Ella Rideout (Vancouver, BC) to tie the game at 1-1. It would stay that way throughout regulation and overtime, meaning a shootout would be required to determine the bronze medalists. It took 10 rounds of a shootout to find a winner, with Gryphons second-year midfielder
Liv Straus (Heidelberg, ON) scoring the decisive goal in the 10th round to give Guelph the 2-1 win.
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the York Lions by an identical score of 2-1 in a shootout, to claim the 2026 OUA title. It marks U of T's first OUA banner since 2023, and their third OUA title in the past five seasons.
