WVB: Gryphons Swept by Memorial in Final Preseason Game

ST. JOHN'S, NFLD - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 by the Memorial Seahawks Saturday night (Oct. 22) in St. John's. Set scores were 18-25, 24-26 & 22-25. The first set was tight early but a 6-0 Memorial run in the middle of the set allowed them to take control and win 25-18. Set 2 started well for the Gryphons as they jumped out to an early 13-5 lead. The Seahawks were able to chip away and tie the set 18 all but Guelph seized the lead again late. Despite multiple set points, the Gryphons were not able to put away the winning point as they eventually fell 26-24. The third set was tight through the technical timeout with Memorial leading 16-15. Guelph had opportunities to take the lead back but were never able to take advantage and they fell 25-22 to finish the match.

Coach Funk stated, "We had chances to win the second and third sets but we couldn't find the finish in either. It was a hard loss for us tonight." Maddie DeDecker led the offense with 8 points (8 kills) followed by Michaela Hellinga with 7 (6 kills, 1 block). The Gryphons will start the regular season next Friday on the road when they visit the McMaster Marauders at 6pm.
