WVB: Gryphons Fall 3-1 to Memorial in Preseason Action in Newfoundland

ST. JOHN'S, NFLD - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision Friday night to the Memorial Seahawks in St. John's, Newfoundland. Set scores were 23-25, 25-12, 23-25 & 18-25.

The first set was a side out battle early with Memorial leading 16-14 at the technical timeout. A couple of small errors late gave the Seahawks the 25-23 victory. Set 2 saw the Gryphons jump out to a 7-0 lead and never look back as they won 25-12. The third set was close early but Guelph opened up a 18-14 lead. The Gryphons stalled in a rotation later as Memorial used a 9-1 run to seize control and win the set 25-23. Set 4 had the Gryphons behind 5-0 early but they hung around and cut the lead to 17-15 later. From there, unforced errors cost Guelph and an 8-3 run allowed Memorial close close the match at 25-18.

Gryphons Head Coach Paul Funk stated, "We played well for stretches tonight but our execution and compete level waned late in set 3 and 4 and it wasn't enough to win tonight."

Maddie DeDecker led the Guelph offense with 11 points (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 block). The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7pm.
