Box Score Thunder Bay, ON - Saturday night in Thunder Bay the Gryphons Women's Basketball team won 78-57 over the Lakehead Thunderwolves to sweep a weekend doubleheader with their OUA Central Division rivals. With the win, the Gryphons sit at 2-0 on the season while Lakehead falls to 0-2.
The Gryphons were led by senior guard
Dana Van Balkom who finished with a team high 18 points on the night. From Lakehead's perspective, it was a familiar sight. In last season's final game of the regular season, Van Balkom lit up the Thunderwolves for 26 points and knocked down six three pointers. On Saturday night, Van Balkom was once again doing some damage from the perimeter against Lakehead, this time to the tune of 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. The Gryphons were able to get off to a good start as a team and took a 15-7 into the second quarter.
Guelph's 11-point lead at the half would grow even larger thanks to an offensive outburst in the 3rd quarter that saw the Gryphons pour in 25 points. Throughout the game, the Gryphons did an excellent job getting to the free throw line where they finished an impressive 24-of-26 from the stripe. The Gryphons also won the turnover battle, forcing 21 Lakehead turnovers while committing just 11 themselves.
Vanessa Rampado chipped in with 11 points and 7 rebounds while
Barbara Inrig-Pieterse had a nice all-around game with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. For a second straight game, rookie
Abbey Clark came off the bench and scored in double figures with 10 points on the night.
The Gryphons will now return to the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre for their OUA regular season home opener on Friday, November 13 when they host the Carleton Ravens. The Gryphons will play their next four league games on home court.
