WBB RECAP: Gryphons Drop Regular Season Openers to Windsor and Western

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team officially tipped off their 2026-27 regular season schedule with a pair of difficult home matchups versus the Windsor Lancers (Oct. 23) and Western Mustangs (Oct. 24). The Gryphons suffered a pair of defeats, and will look to bounce back on Halloween when they head to Thunder Bay to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Game 1 – Friday, Oct. 23, 2026 | Guelph 65 – Windsor 87

The Gryphons season opener on Friday night (Oct. 23) was spoiled by a talented Windsor Lancers team, who left the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre with an 87-65 win. The Gryphons were led by Laurie Calixte (Gatineau, QC), who scored a team-high 15 points. Gryphons fourth-year centre, Keryl Ousey (Mount Gambier, Australia) added 14 points on 5-8 shooting, to go along with 5 blocks, while second-year guard Stephanie Golikowski added 13 points off the bench. The Gryphons as a team were down 8 after 1 quarter, and down 17 at the half and were unable to claw their way back against a Windsor team with experience and size.

Game 2 – Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026 | Guelph 50 – Western 82

On Saturday night, the Gryphons were back at it on their home court, but a slow start would see the Gryphons down 25-2 after the opening quarter of play. The Gryphons would show some promise over the following three quarters, including outscoring Western 22-14 in the 4th, but the slow start would ultimately prove too much to overcome with the Mustangs leaving Guelph with an 82-50 win. Gryphons second-year guard Stephanie Golikowski was the lone Gryphon to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 12 points while going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. The Gryphons (0-2) will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Thunder Bay against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (0-1). Lakehead lost their season opener on Saturday, with the Waterloo Warriors escaping Thunder Bay with a 57-55 win on Saturday, Oct. 24.
