Guelph 3, Western 1
Â
Guelph, Ont. (September 24, 2014) – The Gryphon field hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 on Wednesday night at Varsity Field in Guelph.
Â
Western started the game with possession but Guelph quickly overtook them and pushed the ball into their opponents' end. Defender
Jessica Donaldson (Kingston, Ont.) and forward
Crysta Stubbs (Whitney, Ont.) worked together effectively to keep the ball in Western's end. The Gryphons' work paid off when
Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the first goal in the third minute of play.Â
Â
Captain
Erin Houle (Burlington, Ont.) kept excellent control of the ball, stick-handling around her opponents and making clean, deliberate passes. She took every opportunity to push towards the net and took a shot whenever possible.Â
Â
Guelph's offence took advantage of their defender
Laura Straus (Waterloo, Ont.) to pass backwards and increase their mobility across the field.
Allison Chute (Greenfield Park) scored Guelph's second goal in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a pass across the net to find the bottom left corner. Western scored in the 30th minute of play, bringing the score to 2-1 in the Gryphons' favour after the first half.Â
Â
In the second half, Guelph had many opportunities to score as a result of their clean and well-executed short corner plays. Goalie
Shinai Sorensen (Victoria, BC) kept Western from tying the score with a diving save in the second half. Allison Chute ensured Guelph's lead in the 55th minute with her second goal of the game.Â
Â
The Gryphons will face the York Lions in London on Saturday (Sept 27), scheduled to play at 10:45 am.Â
