Guelph 5 – McGill 0
Toronto 2 – Guelph 1
Kingston, Ont. (September 21, 2014) – The Gryphon field hockey team split a pair of games on Sunday in Kingston, Ont.
In game one, the Gryphs blanked McGill 5-0. Guelph lit up the scoreboard early with the first marker coming five minutes into the contest and added two more by the 17th minute to go ahead by three.
Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) scored the game winner deflecting Nicole Paola's shot from the top of the circle. Chute also recorded the insurance goal on a very well executed play from
Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, ON) to Chute to
Ciara Condon (London, ON) and back to Chute. Captain
Erin Houle (Burlington, ON) found the back of the net from the top of the circle before the torrential downpour started to interfere with the field conditions. In the second half, Guelph added another two en route to the 5-0 romping. Captain
Laura Straus (Waterloo, ON) scored on a penalty corner play then Paola (Waterloo, ON) added the final marker with one minute remaining.
Shinai Sorensen was in net for the shutout.
Less than five hours later, the Gryphons faced their perennial contender, Toronto. In the first three minutes, Guelph had a fantastic opportunity to go in front as Chute beat the Blues goaltender and sent the ball along the goal line which hit the opposite post.
Olivia Lane (Guelph, ON) sent the ball back towards the net but Toronto's netminder saved it off her toe. The Blues retaliated but were successful in their efforts two minutes later.
It was a very intense high paced see saw battle throughout the entire match. Unfortunately, Toronto scored four minutes into the second half for a 2-0 lead. At the 45 minute mark, Chute stole the ball from a Blues' defender to narrow the margin. Guelph had two back to back penalty corners in the final minute of play but were unable to capitalize. Laura Straus and captain
Jessica Donaldson (Kingston, ON) had exceptional games in the backfield.
The 3-1 Gryphons play at home Wednesday night where they face the Western Mustangs at 7:00 pm.
