Guelph 3 vs. Western 1
  Guelph, Ont. (February 8, 2014) - On a night when they honored graduating seniors Alicia Combe-Dingwall, Taylor Crown & Stephanie Vickers  the University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-21, 27-25, 17-25 & 25-23.
 
Guelph finishes the regular season at 14-5, good for first in the OUA West division and will now host a quarter final match against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday (February 15) at 6:00 pm. 
 
The first set started out with Western jumping to an early lead which they managed to maintain through the middle of the set. However, the Gryphons were able to fight back late using a 9-2 run to take the set 25-21. Set 2 was a reversal as Guelph led through the early going, only to see Western tie the score late before the Gryphons finished at 27-25. The third set saw Western taking an early lead and Guelph could get no closer than 4 points the rest of the way losing 25-17. Set 4 was a close battle with Western turning in a great defensive performance in frustrating the Gryphon attack. Guelph forged ahead late but a desperate Mustang team closed to within a point before an Alicia Combe kill sealed the match at 25-23.
 
Coach Funk said, "Tonight sure felt like a playoff-type atmosphere in terms of how hard Western fought. We're happy to be in the position we're in and certainly having a match like that to finish the regular season is great preparation going forward into the playoffs. We need to have a good week of preparation this week and be ready to face a similar level of fight and desperation from our quarter final opponent, whoever that may be."
 
Rebecca Breau led the Guelph offense with 19 points (17 kills, 2 blocks) while Kristen Almhjell racked up 16 digs to lead the defense.
 
The Gryphons will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves in an OUA West quarter-final on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 6:00 pm.
