Thunder Bay, Ont. – The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves in four sets Saturday afternoon in Thunder Bay. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 18-25 & 25-23. The first set started well for the Gryphons as they were able to take an early lead which they expanded later in the set to win 25-15. Set two was much of the same as Guelph jumped ahead and never relinquished the lead to win 25-17. The third set was a close affair in the first half with the teams tied at 13 before a lengthy scorekeeping delay. The Gryphons opened a 17-14 lead thanks to some errors from Lakehead but then things started to change on the Guelph side. Lakehead ripped off an 11-1 run thanks to some better serving and unforced errors by the Gryphons as they took the set 25-18. Set four started poorly for Guelph as they fell behind 10-3. The teams took turns siding out over the next section as Lakehead were comfortably ahead 17-10 before the Gryphons started to perform again and narrowed the gap. Down 23-20, Guelph started to serve tougher and put pressure on Lakehead late with blocking points as a 5-0 run decided the match with the Gryphons winning 25-23.
Coach Funk stated, "I wasn't particularly happy with the match today. I thought we had 2 good stretches of play, one in the middle of set two and the other at the end of the fourth set where we were able to execute at an acceptable level. Lakehead made a lot of unforced errors early which allowed us to get wins without having to do too much but I expect that some of their players will be much better tomorrow."
Maddie DeDecker led the Guelph offense with 12 points (10 kills, 2 blocks) followed by
Shannon Morelli with 10 (8 kills, 2 blocks). DeDecker also chipped in 19 digs on defense followed by
Kristen Almhjell with 13. Guelph and Lakehead go at it again Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
