Windsor, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team came back from a two sets to one deficit to defeat the Windsor Lancers in five sets on the road Friday night. Set scores were 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 27-25 & 15-11. The first set was close for most of the early going but the Gryphons forged ahead late to take the set 25-19. Set two was a close affair with neither team leading by more than a few points but it was Windsor who led late and finished at 25-23. Windsor jumped on top early in the third set and Guelph could never close the gap falling 25-20. The Gryphons looked to be in trouble in set four as they trailed throughout. Guelph managed to fight off a couple of match points and some late blocking points were the difference in staying alive with a 27-25 win. In the fifth set, the Gryphons jumped out to an early lead that they were able to maintain until a Becky Breau (London, Ont.) line kills finished the match at 15-11.

Coach Funk stated, "The credit for this win tonight belongs to our subs. Cayte Wilson (Kelowna, B.C.), Leslie Ogilvie (Kitchener, Ont.) and Victoria Golebiowski (Binbrook, Ont.) came in in the fourth set and changed the energy on the court and they performed well in a tough spot." The Gryphons offense was led by Jen Johnstone with 13 points (6 kills, 2 aces, 5 blocks) followed by Becky Breau with 11 (11 kills) while Kristen Almhjell had 22 digs. Guelph's road weekend continues tomorrow in London tomorrow when they visit the Western Mustangs at 6pm.
