Guelph 2 vs. Queen's 3 (20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 10-15)
 
Hamilton, Ont. (October 9, 2014) - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team opened the Mizuno McMaster Thanksgiving tournament with a five set loss to the Queen's Gaels on Thursday afternoon. Set scores were 20-25-, 25-13, 25-23, 21-25 & 10-15.

Guelph started slowly in the first set falling behind by as many as seven early on and could never make up the difference the rest of the way losing 25-20. Set two started out with a nine point serving run by Katelyn Larson and the Gryphons never looked back in winning 25-13. The third set saw Guelph fall behind again early on but they scrapped their way back into the set late and won 25-23 after a couple of Queen's hitting errors. Set four saw Queen's lead through most of the set. Guelph got as close as two points on a number of occasions but unforced errors gave Queen's the 25-21 win. The Gryphons were never in the fifth set as they made numerous serve receive and hitting errors in handing the set and match to Queen's with a 15-10 loss.
 
Coach Funk commented, "Our consistency was very poor today as we were never able to maintain a flow in our game beyond 5 or 6 points at a time. Both teams took turns giving up runs of points, but for us, the end of the fourth and the entire fifth set was poor in terms of our execution of the basics."

Shannon Morelli led the Guelph offence with 18 points (14 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace) followed by Rebecca Breau with 11 (9 kills, 1 block, 1 ace).

Guelph continues in the tournament tomorrow when they face RMC at 1:00 p.m.
