Guelph 2 - McGill 1
Guelph, Ont. (Oct. 4, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team played the visiting McGill Redmen at home today. The Gryphons won 2-1, maintaining their second place OUA standing for the season sitting with a 7-1 record.
Both teams were very strong, with effective passing as well as speed and agility to round out their game. Guelph's
Rebecca Plouffe (Oakville, Ont.) and
Erin Houle (Burlington, Ont.) kept their passes right along the sidelines to move the play up the field, making it difficult for McGill's players to get their sticks near the ball. McGill was the first to score in the 5th minute, but the Gryphons were able to regain possession and pushed much of the play into the offensive zone for the first half. Gryphons defender
Jessica Donaldson (Kingston, Ont.) effectively stick handled around her opponents, and forwards
Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, Ont.) and
Crysta Stubbs (Whitney, Ont.) attempted multiple shots on net despite the efforts of McGill's defensive line.
In the second half, Guelph kept much of the play in McGill's end, with many opportunities to score. Finally, Guelph's hard work was rewarded in the 51st minute when freshman
Olivia Lane (Guelph, Ont.) connected with an airborne pass across the net to put the Gryphons on the board with their first goal. Encouraged by this success, Guelph kept the offensive pressure on for the remainder of the second half and were able to score a second goal thanks to Stubbs in the 60th minute of play.
This victory brings the Gryphons' season record to 7-1-0 and maintains their 4-game winning streak. The Gryphons are scheduled to play the University of Toronto tomorrow (Oct 5) at 10:45 am and Queen's at 2:15 p.m. at Varsity Field in Guelph.
