Gryphons secure 6 points & remain undefeated

The Gryphon field hockey team remained undefeated in OUA league play on Saturday afternoon when they earned victories a pair of 3-1 victories over Queens and McGill.

In their first game of the day the Gryphons defeated the Queens Gaels 3-1 with three different Gryphons scoring.

Despite the Gryphons controlling most of the play and having several really good opportunities to score, they were locked in a scoreless tie at the break.

Twenty minutes into the second stanza, Queen's hit the scoreboard first but the Gryphs retaliated right away as Erin Houle  stick handled her way through four Gaels' players to knot the match at 1-1. Shortly after, Houle set up Amy Wise to put the Gryphs ahead. With seven minutes to go, Laura Straus capitalized on a penalty corner for the insurance marker. Melissa Vogl was credited with the assist. Kaye McLagan  earned the win.

With only a one game break the Gryphons downed a fresh McGill side with a 3-1 scoreline in their next contest.

Two minutes into the contest, the Gryphs made a succession of passes from the 50-yard line which was initiated by Houle and ended with Daniela Jelec finding an open Ciara Condon who buried the ball into the back of the cage. After 14 minutes of play, Houle found the back of the net and Jelec recorded her second assist of the match. With three minutes to intermission, Straus converted on her second penalty corner of the day. Wise grabbed the assist.

In the second frame, McGill scored with 5 minutes remaining to reduce the gap for a 3-1 final result in Guelph's favour. Kaye McLagan and Morgan Kelley shared net minding duties.

With the two victories, the Gryphs move to 4-0 on the season.

Guelph hosts Toronto Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 am. when the coaches "Go Shoeless" in support of the "Right to Play" campaign. Sunday the Gryphs are at home to Western at 9:00 am and McGill at 2:15 pm.
