Ont. – The Gryphon women's basketball team dropped a 81-51 OUA quarterfinal game tonight (Feb. 20) to the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton to end their 2012-13 season.
With two key members of the rotation out with injuries for the Gryphons, including
Kayla Goodhoofd and
Alyssa Shortt, they could only dress 11 players and struggled most of the way. The Marauders opened the game with a 48-20 lead as the Gryphons struggled to score with only 10 points scored in each opening quarter. In the third the Gryphons stormed out of the locker room to outscore McMaster 21-16. In the fourth the Marauders regained control of the game secured the 30 point victory.
The Marauders shot an impressive 49 percent from the field on 31-of-63, while the Gryphons shot 27 percent on 18-of-65.
Graduating senior,
Jasmine Douglas was an unstoppable force for the Gryphons with a standout performance in her last game as a Gryphon. She led the team with nine points and nine rebounds and was named the player of the game.
The game started well for the Gryphons as
Marlee Freeman drained a three-pointer to go up 3-0, but it was downhill from there as McMaster went on a 11-0 run to grab an early cushion and by the end of the first quarter were in front 27-10.
In the second stanza Guelph switched to a zone defence, which helped slow down the Marauders. The Gryphons scored three unanswered baskets to cut the deficit to 27-16 and forced McMaster to call a timeout. From that point on the Marauders would outscore the Gryphons 21-4 and headed into half with a commanding 48-20 lead.
In the third quarter, McMaster bumped up their lead to 30 at 59-29, allowing them to into their reserve players. With the Maraduers spreading out the minutes, Guelph was able to bring the deficit down to 64-41 heading into the final quarter.
McMaster came out full throttle in the fourth quarter, going on a 15-2 scoring run that opened teh biggest lead of the game at 79-43. The Gryphons were exhausted and looked fatigued but finished the game until the final buzzer.
The Marauders advance to the OUA West semi-finals at Brock.
The Gryphons finished the regular season with a 7-14 record going into the playoffs.
