LONDON, Ont. (November 23, 2013) -  The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 on the road this afternoon. Set scores were 25-21, 15-25, 25-21 & 25-7. The first set was close in the early going with the teams tied at 16 before Guelph forged ahead 19-16. The Gryphons were able to maintain the lead later to win 25-21. Set 2 started poorly for Guelph as they fell behind 8-2. The Gryphons closed to within 1 briefly but let Western re-establish a comfortable lead and lost the set 25-15. The third set saw Guelph build a 7 point lead early leading 16-9 but they allowed the Mustangs to close to within 3 before finishing at 25-21. In set 4, the Gryphons wanted to establish an early lead and they were successful jumping out to an 11-0 lead. From there, they blocked well and finished the match going away at 25-7.

Coach Funk said, "We prepared well in the lead up to this match but for the first 2 sets, we were not playing at a high level. We had some players today who had to grind it out in order to get to a better level but we got there eventually and got the result we needed."

Becky Breau led the Guelph offense with 16 points (12 kills, 3 aces 1 block) followed by Maddie DeDecker with 15 (13 kills, 2 aces) and Rachel Petcoff with 13 (11 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) while Kristen Almhjell chipped in 17 digs on defense.

The Gryphons conclude their first half schedule tomorrow on the road in Windsor as they square off with the Lancers at 1pm.
