Guelph 66, Laurentian 51

SUDBURY, Ont. (November 15, 2013) – The Guelph Gryphon women's basketball team earned a 66-51 victory Friday night over Laurentian in Sudbury. The Gryphons earned their first victory of the season and are 1-4, while Laurentian falls to 1-4.
 
Katherine MacTavish led the Gryphons with a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Marlee Freeman and Erica McFadden contributed 14 and 13 points respectively.
 
Looking for their first win of the season the Gryphons came out of the gate firing and got off to a quick start grabbing a 17-point lead (23-6) at the end of the first quarter. Despite a strong push by the Voyageurs in the second quarter the Gryphons continued to lead the way and took a 36-25 lead at the half.
 
Coming into the second half the Voyageurs demonstrated more effective offensive presence putting up 17 points against the Gryphons in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Gryphons stayed consistent and fended off the pushing Voyageurs outscoring them 14-9 to secure the 66-51 victory.
 
The Gryphons continue their road trip tomorrow against Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie for an 6:00 p.m. game.
