Guelph, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team won their second consecutive five set match at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center tonight defeating the Ryerson Rams 3-2. Set scores were 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25 and 15-13.

The first set was close throughout with each team battling back and forth. The Gryphons called a timeout trailing 20-18 but used a 7-1 run to close out the set 25-21. Set 2 was very similar with each team siding out consistently. Guelph led late 23-21 but Ryerson closed with a 4-0 run to even the match 25-23. The third set saw Guelph jump to an early lead at 20-12. Ryerson sided out consistently down the stretch but couldn't make up the difference as the Gryphons took the set 25-19. Set 4 was a back and forth affair early on but Ryerson forged ahead midway through and again evened the match with a 25-20 win. The deciding set started well for Guelph as they led 3-0 and 8-6 at the cross over but Ryerson refused to give in tying the set at 11. Down 13-12, the Gryphons called timeout and, following 2 huge blocks by Maddie DeDecker and Alicia Combe-Dingwall, closed out the win at 15-13.

Coach Funk said, "This was another hard-fought victory for our team. Ryerson's defence was spectacular at times and we really had to dig deep to come away with the win. Our offensive balance was great tonight and Becky Breau did a great job off the bench for us."

Guelph had four players in double digits tonight led by Rachel Petcoff with 17 (15 kills, 2 aces), Maddie DeDecker with 16 (15 kills, 1 block), Alicia Combe-Dingwall with 15 (7 kills, 2 aces, 6 blocks) and Becky Breau with 12 (9 kills, 3 aces).

The Gryphons have no time to rest as they are on the road tomorrow at Waterloo at 12pm.
