Gryphons defeat RMC 3-1 for first home win of the season

Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's men's volleyball team defeated the visiting RMC Paladin's 3-1 Saturday night at the Mitchell Centre. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 24-26 and 25-17.

The Gryphons advance to 2-2 on the season, while RMC sufferes their first loss of the year 0-1. 
 
Jordan MacIntyre led the Gryphon offence with 15 points (15 kills) followed by Patrick Strzalkowski with 12 points (9 kills, 3 aces).
 
Thomas McMullen led RMC with 19 points (11 kills, 4 blocks, 8 block assists).
 
In the first set the Paladins jumped to a quick lead. Led by the veteran presence of Thomas McMullen RMC was able to hold off any momentum the Gryphon's could manage. Guelph finally mounted a comeback tying the score up 15-15. A few critical points by the Gryphon's gave them a late 22-19 advantage. RMC battled back to make it a one-point game at 22-21, but Guelph did not allow the Paladin's a comeback, taking the set 25-22.
 
The second set opened with plenty of back and forth scoring. There were some great digs by both sides. Guelph jumped to an early 9-5 lead, forcing RMC to call a timeout to stop the Gryphon momentum. The timeout proved ineffective as Guelph extended the lead to 16-12. Guelph's Connor Cressman had an impressive second set as the Gryphon's took the set 25-15.
 
After taking the first two sets Guelph looked to end the match in straight sets. They jumped to a quick 6-2 lead in the set. Guelph extended their lead to 16-10, forcing RMC to take a timeout. The Paladin's made it interesting tying the set at 23, and then eventually winning the set 26-24.
 
Guelph opened the next set off on fire, taking a quick 8-3 lead. The Gryphon's never looked back, extending the lead to 17-11 and eventually taking the deciding set 25-17.
 
The Gryphon's are back in action Friday (Nov.1) as they host the Ryerson Rams at 8:00 p.m.
