Gryphons Defeat Nipissing in Straight Sets

Box Score

North Bay, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 tonight in North Bay. Set scores were 25-16, 25-10 & 25-18.

The first set started slowly for Guelph as numerous hitting errors allowed Nipissing to take a 10-4 lead. However, after an early timeout, the Gryphons buckled down on defense and Stephanie Vickers led the offense on a 21-6 run to win 25-16. Set 2 started much better and a long serving run from Nicole Collard enabled Guelph to win comfortably at 25-10. At the start of the third set, more Gryphon hitting errors led to a close set in the early going. However after leading by just 2 points at the technical timeout, Guelph's defense and some Laker errors allowed the Gryphons to close out the match at 25-18.

Coach Funk stated, "I wasn't thrilled with our starts in sets 1 & 3, but we played good defense until our offense came around. Stephanie Vickers carried us offensively in that first set and Shannon Morelli was good on the right as well."

Stephanie Vickers led the offense with 12 points (11 kills, 1 block) followed by Shannon Morelli with 9 (8 kills, 1 ace) while Kristen Almhjell had 13 digs on defense.

Guelph's next action will be their home opener next Friday at 6pm against the Brock Badgers.
