Gryphons fall to Thunderwolves but advance to post season

Box Score
The Lakehead Thunderwolves took the second game of a weekend doubleheader 82-68 over the Guelph Gryphon women's basketball team tonight in Thunder Bay.  The Gryphons however earn the better prize of advancing to the post-season grabbing the sixth and final playoff spot.

The two teams finish with matching 10-12 regular season records, however the Gryphons earn the playoff spot due to point differential.  Guelph defeated Lakehead in their first game by a larger margin (83-63).

The sixth seeded Gryphons will play the third seeded Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo this week for an OUA West quarterfinal game.  Playoff dates and times are yet to be determined.

With the Thunderwolves knowing that they must win by 21 to extend their season, they pushed with all their might from the opening tip; they played with more urgency than ever before this season. They would outscore the Gryphons by three in the first quarter, tie them (17-17) in the second, win the third (20-19) and the fourth quarter 27-17. The last two minutes of play were as frantic as any this season, with 'Wolves diving, flying and fighting tooth and nail at both ends of the court but it was too little too late as the Gryphons earned the last playoff spot.

The Gryphons were led by Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) with 22 points and nine rebounds followed by Alyssa Shortt (Waterloo, Ont.) with 14 points and Ali Dzikowski (Brantford, Ont.) with 13 points.

Lindsey Druery led Lakehead with 24 points and collected 12 rebounds while Carolyn Fragale (Thunder Bay,ON) had 16 points and 5 assists while Ayse Kalkan (Winnipeg, MB) scored 15.
