The University of Guelph women's volleyball team picked up their first win of the season tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center in the first of a pair of weekend matches against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
The Gryphons swept Lakehead in 3 sets with scores of 25-20, 25-15, & 25-17.
The first set was a close battle until 20 points but a string of unforced errors by Lakehead allowed Guelph to pull away winning 25-20. The Gryphons jumped ahead early in set two taking a four  point lead that they maintained through the technical timeout. From there, Guelph kept the pressure on and again surged ahead to win 25-15. The third set saw the Gryphons again forge an early lead that they expanded later to win comfortably 25-17.
"Our serving was very poor tonight early on and our consistency was not there early in sets which is a concern going forward. But our team did a good job of siding out at the important times in the match and that was really to deciding factor for us tonight," said University of Guelph head coach Paul Funk.  "We have a quick turn-around to play them again on Saturday and adjustments will be made so we need to be better tomorrow if we want a similar result."
Brooke Lloyd led the Gryphons offense with 14 points (13 kills, 1 ace) followed byÂ
Kaitlyn Krizmanich with 10 (10 kills).
The two teams will battle again onSaturday afternoon at the Mitchell Center with game time at 4pm.
