Guelph 3 vs. Brock 0 (25-20, 25-29, 25-23)
The University of Guelph women's volleyball team got an important road victory in St. Catharines Saturday night defeating the Brock Badgers 3-0.
The first set was a back and forth affair with Guelph opening up leads and Brock closing the gap. The Gryphons had leads of 5-1 and 17-12, but each time Brock fought back to narrow the lead. With the score at 20-19, a late Guelph run gave them the set 25-20. Set 2 went back and forth between the teams with each team siding out consistently. Again, the Gryphons turned up the heat late with a 5 point run winning 25-19. In the third set, Guelph had early leads but were never able to shake Brock. A long string of important side outs allowed the Gryphons to maintain a slight edge ending with a huge block to take the set and match at 25-23.
"We sided out very well tonight when we had to and we had a very balanced attack offensively. Melissa McGinn made great choices in her setting and got her hitters a lot of very good looks in attack," stated coach Paul Funk.
Guelph's offensive balance showed on the stats sheet as 4 Gryphons scored 12 points each including Brooke Lloyd (12 kills), Kylen Van Osch (6 kills, 2 aces, 4 blocks), Erinn Bickle (9 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) and Claire Sandor (11 kills, 1 block).
The Gryphons' (11-3) next action is at home next weekend starting on Friday at 6pm against the Ryerson Rams.
