Gryphons beat Lancers 3-1, finish weekend 1-1

Jan. 15: Guelph 3 – Windsor 1 (25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18)

GUELPH - The Guelph Gryphon men's volleyball team matched up against the Windsor Lancers on January 15 in Guelph at the Mitchell Centre. After a weak third set, the Gryphons re-asserted themselves in the fourth, and finally took the game 3-1. Set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18.

The first set was won quickly by the Gryphons. They held on the pressure throughout the set and met very little resistance from the Lancers. Winston Rosser (Whitby, ON) and Kevin Stewart (Ancaster, ON) consistently attacked Windsor's defence, which made for a quick finish 25-18.

The teams were much more evenly matched during the second set. The score rose point by point with Rosser continuing his great play with a number of kills and Harrison Oake (Rodney, ON) doing the same for the Lancers. The Gryphons began giving points away as their defensive skills weakened, and they let Lancer attacks hit the ground without much opposition. Luckily their offensive strength made up for it, and they finished the set 25-21.

MVball Action
The Gryphons played a shaky set during the third. The Lancer outside hitter Kyle Williamson (Essex, ON) dominated and was a major factor in bringing the Windsor team into the lead. Guelph continued to suffer defensively and had a hard time returning any attacks. The Lancers won this set 18-25.

The Gryphons entered the fourth set with new force, and it was clear they were back in the game. Riley McAllister (Oakville, ON) played a major role in the Gryphon's success, as he stabilized Lancer attacks and set up his teammates with perfect opportunities for return. Rosser, Andrew Revie (Guelph, ON) and James Stamler (North Bay, ON) all took advantage of these plays and helped end the game with a 25-18 finish.

The Gryphons were led by Winston Rosser with 16 total points (16 kills, 1 ace, and 9 digs). Close behind was Kevin Stewart with 14 total points (9 kills, and 2 digs).

The Lancers were led by Kyle Williamson with 20 total points, 19 kills, and 3 digs. Tied with total points of 10 and 9 kills each, were Jimmy El-Turk (Windsor, ON) and Harrison Oake.

The Gryphons next play the Ryerson Rams on January 28 in Guelph at the Mitchell Centre. The game begins at 8pm.
