Gryphons suffer first loss of the season

Nov. 5: McMaster 3 – Guelph 1 (16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 12-25)

HAMILTON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team's season opening winning streak came to a crashing halt this afternoon when they suffered a 3-1 road loss to the McMaster Marauders.

The first set started well for McMaster as their tough serving and scrappy defense had Guelph on their heels, enabling them to win 25-16. Set 2 was more of the same as the Gryphons could not get any offensive flow and some key Guelph errors at the end of the set allowed McMaster to win 25-21. The Gryphons fought hard to try and get back into the match in the third set winning an ugly set 25-22. However, Guelph trailed early in set 4 and lost their fire while falling 25-12.

"Mac deserved full credit for the win this afternoon. They beat us in every aspect of the game and gave us a good butt whipping," stated Coach Funk.

Guelph's offense was led by Erinn Bickle (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) and Brooke Lloyd (5 kills, 5 aces, 1 block) with 11 points each.

The Gryphons travel to Thunder Bay next Saturday to take on Lakehead at 2pm.
