Gryphons Finish First Half on Winning Note

  Nov. 28: Guelph 3 - Ottawa 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14)

GUELPH - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team ended the first half of their schedule on a winning note this afternoon with a 3-0 home win against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The match was postponed from the previous night due to a lack of officials. The first set was close early but Guelph managed to open up a 16-13 lead midway through the set. The lead expanded to 23-18 later and the Gryphons finished winning 25-21. Set 2 was another back and forth battle with the teams tied at 18 all before a couple of Ottawa errors allowed Guelph to take control late and win 25-20. In the third set, Guelph gradually built a comfortable lead to cruise to the 25-14 win. "Our defense and serve receive were pretty consistent throughout the match today and we were able to get kills both off serve receive and in transition.

This was a much needed win going into the break," stated coach Paul Funk. Guelph's offense was led by Brooke Lloyd with 14 points (11 kills, 3 blocks) followed by Kylen Van Osch with 11 (9 kills, 2 blocks). Megan Canavan had 16 digs to anchor the defense.

The Gryphons finish the first half with a 7-2 record. They will play a couple of exhibition matches during the last week of December against Universite de Sherbrooke and St. FX before opening the second half of the year on the road on Jan. 7 at 6pm against Waterloo.
