Oct. 30: Guelph 3 – Laurier 1
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphon men's volleyball team defeated the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks tonight 3-1 with set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-16. The Gryphons advance to 4-1 on the year and complete the weekend sweep, after a victory over Waterloo last night.
The first set began with both teams fighting for points. But the Gryphons pushed hard taking the set 25-22. Guelph led for most of the second set and won 25-17. The third set was even for most part as the teams traded points back and forth until the Golden Hawks charged ahead after the second technical timeout. Laurier used some good blocking and earned two kills by Derek Lapp to move ahead for the first time in the set 16-15. Meanwhile Guelph made some untimely errors that hindered them. The Hawks outscored the Gryphons 9-4 to close out the third set for their only win, 25-19. The Gryphons came out strong in the fourth set, taking both technical time outs. Guelph held a 21-11 lead at one point before the Hawks mounted a small comeback. The Hawks battled back to get to 21-15, but it was too little too late as Winston Rosser got the Gryphons to 24-16 on a pair of kills. Guelph took the game after the Hawks hit the ball out of bounds to earn the 3-1 victory.
The Gryphons were led by Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) with an impressive 21 kills on the night. Ryan Kileen (10 kills, 2 aces) and Kevin Stewart (8 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) each tallied 12 points apiece. Setter Riley McAllister was named the Player of the Match after tallying 46 assists and 11 digs.
For the Golden Hawks, Kevin Rowe was named the Player of the Game after tallying eight kills and two blocks on the night. Leading the Hawks in scoring was Cameron Wheelan with 14 kills.
The Gryphons are back in action at the Mitchell Centre on November 5 when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at 8:00 p.m.
