Gryphs Solve the Lions' Keeper
The Gryphons dominated the play en route to a 3-1 victory over York. Nevertheless, it was not an easy feat as York's goalkeeper, a member of Canada's national squad, had a phenomenal performance in the cage. At the 21-minute mark, 5
th year sweeper Heather Mitchell (Guelph, ON) intercepted the ball at Guelph's defensive 25-yard line, hit an open Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, ON) who carried the ball down the wing to the baseline then eliminated a sprawling York keeper to put Guelph on the scoreboard. Seconds later, Krissy Wishart (Hamilton, ON) nailed the post, but the Lions managed to save the ball off the line.
In the second half, the Lions evened the score at 47 minutes but the Gryphons never let up and showed excellent composure. Immediately, the Gryphons retaliated as Angela Lancaster (Burlington, ON) and Brienne Stairs went on a 2-0 breakaway on the York netminder who came up with a brilliant save. Minutes later, Guelph was awarded a penalty corner earned by Wishart. Mitchell struck the ball into the circle and Stairs made some tight stick work moves before scoring a reverse shot goal in the top right corner for the game winner. With 12 minutes on the clock, Lancaster scored the insurance marker off a penalty corner struck by Wishart, which deflected off a Lions' defender for the 3-1 win. Dorothy Marcy (Oliver, BC) backstopped the Gryphons allowing only 1 goal, her first of the season.
Guelph Blanks a Much Improved McGill Side
Off McGill's opening pushback, Krissy Wishart (Hamilton, ON) earned a free hit and connected to hit an open Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, ON) who drove the baseline despite man to man coverage and slipped the ball back to Wishart who found the back of the net a mere 22 seconds into the contest. Despite numerous opportunities, it took the Gryphons another 26 minutes before they found the net again on a carbon copy play from Stairs to Wishart for a 2-0 lead. In the second frame, Guelph was very sloppy on their tackling side of the game and had a dry spell in scoring. However, with 6 minutes remaining, Stairs scored on a reverse sweep shot for the 3-0 win. Kaye McLagan (Mitchell, ON) recorded the shutout.
