WATERLOO, Ont. – Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) at the Laurier Athletic Complex, the Gryphons women's basketball team were able to get back in the win column in a 72-63 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gryphons improve to 14-6 on the season while Laurier drops to 9-11.
The Gryphons got out to a much better start in the second game of this home-and-home set scoring 28 points in the opening quarter including four from behind the arc to take an early 28-14 lead. Laurier would chip away at the lead until a layup off the turnover with 3:20 left in the third quarter to take a 48-47 lead. Guelph would not allow a repeat of Wednesday loss to occur when
Renee Armstrong was able
sneak behind the Laurier defence and made a baseline cut to score an important layup that ended the 11-0 Golden Hawk run. The basket allowed the Gryphons to calm down as they would end the final 2:32 of the third on an 8-0 run to take a 55-48 lead. The run was enough for the Gryphs to come away with a 72-63 win to split the home-and-home with the Golden Hawks.
The Gryphons were led by
Renee Armstrong (London, ON) who scored a game-high 23 points from 9-15 shooting from the field to go along with her 4 steals. Third-year guard
Hannah Bourdon (Fort Erie, ON) had another outstanding performance finishing the afternoon with a 19 point, 12 rebound double-double. The Gryphons are in prime position for home court advantage in the opening round of OUA women's basketball playoffs, with two games remaining in the 2024-25 OUA regular season schedule.
The Gryphons will close out the final two games of the regular season schedule on February 14 and 15 on the road in Sault Ste. Marie against the last-place Algoma Thunderbirds (1-19). The opening round of playoffs in OUA women's basketball is set for Wednesday, February 19.
