SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The playoff-bound Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team ended their 2024-25 OUA regular season schedule with a pair of road wins this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie against the last-place Algoma Thunderbirds. The Gryphons will now host an OUA playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 19 versus the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks after finishing the regular season with an impressive 16-6 record.
Game 1 (Friday, Feb. 14, 2025) | Guelph 65 – Algoma 41
The Gryphons started their weekend in Sault Ste. Marie off on Friday night, with a dominant defensive effort that saw the Gryphons limit Algoma to just 6 points in the 2nd quarter and 6 points in the 3rd quarter, en route to a convincing 65-41 victory.
Julia Colavecchia and
Lucy Tesseyman led a balanced attack with 12 points each, with Guelph dominating the game on the glass, out-rebounding the Thunderbirds 46-28. With the win on Friday night, the Gryphons improved to 15-6 on the season, while Algoma fell to 1-20.
Game 2 (Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025) | Guelph 64 – Algoma 58
Saturday afternoon, the Gryphons and Thunderbirds were back at it at the George Leach Centre, in game that marked the regular season finale for both teams. The visiting Gryphons were able to jump out to an 18-point lead at the half, with Algoma making a run in the second half to make the final score just a six-point game. Renee Armstong and
Hannah Bourdon each scored 17 points to lead the way for the Gryphons, with
Keryl Ousey adding 11 points off the bench. With the Saturday afternoon win at Algoma, the Gryphons picked up their 16th win of the season to head into the playoffs with a 16-6 record. The Algoma Thunderbirds end the 2024-25 OUA regular season with a record of 1-21.
