MBB RECAP: Gryphons Sweep Weekend Home Doubleheader

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's basketball team swept both legs of their home doubleheader this weekend as they defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds on Friday night (Oct. 31) and Waterloo Warriors (Nov. 1) from the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The Gryphons returned to the court on Friday night as they utilize a strong performance in the middle two quarters in their 87-56 win over Algoma. The Gryphons would go on a 10-2 run midway through the quarter to build a 12 point cushion as they'd take a 52-38 lead at the half. Guelph would turn it on the defensive end in the second half, holding the Thunderbirds to 5 points on 2-11 shooting from the field in the third, turning a 14 point lead into a 30 point lead as they'd cruise to a win on home court. Twelve Gryphons saw action and all twelve players scored, led by Jack Tunstill's 17 points on 8-11 shooting from the field.

On Saturday night, the Gryphons continued their strong shooting display as they broke the century mark in their 102-75 win over the Waterloo Warriors. Guelph offensively shot 56.5% from the field and made 10 of their 19 three-pointers in one of their best offensive performances in the season. The opening quarter set the tone for the Gryphs as they made 13 of their 19 shots in the first, scoring 33 points as they led 33-20 as they wouldn't look back in their third win of the season. Five Gryphons finished in double figures, led by Jack Tunstill's game high 23 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the field. Emmanuel Black was perfect from the field, making all six of his shots and scoring 12 points. Eric Armstong made all nine of his free throws as he had 15 points and a game high 7 boards.
 
The Gryphons (3-1) will head on the road for the first time this season for a pair of OUA West division games starting on Friday night (Nov. 7) against the Windsor Lancers before making their way to London for a matchup with the Western Mustangs on Saturday night (Nov. 8).
