WLAX RECAP: Gryphons Claim Bronze at 2025 OUA Women’s Lacrosse Championships

Guelph earns a spot on the OUA podium for first time in 12 years

WATERLOO, Ont. – For the first time in 12 years, the Guelph Gryphons have earned a spot on the OUA podium in women's lacrosse. On Sunday, Oct. 19 at Wilfrid Laurier University's Ansley Alumni Field, the Gryphons women's lacrosse team picked up a 10-8 victory over the host Laurier Golden Hawks in the bronze medal game of the 2025 OUA Women's Lacrosse Championships. It marks the program's first podium finish at OUA's since earning OUA silver back in 2013.

The Gryphons entered the three-day conference championship tournament as the No. 2-seed, and got off to a quick start, defeating the Brock Badgers in an OUA quarterfinal matchup on Friday afternoon (Oct. 17) by a score of 15-5. After falling to the Queen's Gaels, 13-5, in their semifinal matchup on Saturday, the Gryphons would bounce back on Sunday morning (Oct. 19), with Guelph building up an early lead and holding off a late Laurier surge to secure the hardware. Kate Donaldson and Kassi Hogan paced the Gryphons' attack with two goals apiece, while Aimee Evans also struck twice. After Guelph's starting goalkeeper Madison Hungerbuhler was forced to leave the game in the first half after a collision with a Golden Hawk, Sara Silano came on in relief and shut the door down the stretch, helping the Gryphons preserve their two-goal advantage.

Gryphons head coach, Megan Shea, in her third season as head coach of the University of Guelph women's lacrosse program, was named OUA Coach of the Year. Gryphons fifth-year defender, Kirsten Sutter (Chatsworth, ON) was named the OUA Defensive Player of the Year, while teammates Kasi Hogan and Rachel McConvey joined Sutter on the list of OUA All-Stars. The Trent Excalibur took home OUA gold medals, defeating the Queen's Gaels 8-4 in the OUA title game.
