GUELPH, Ont. - One of the best rivalries in Ontario University Athletics lived up to the hype once again. On Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon at the University of Guelph's Varsity Field, the Gryphons men's rugby team picked up a thrilling 35-31 victory over the Queen's Gaels, in a match up of perennial powers in OUA men's rugby. The three-time defending OUA champion Gryphons fell behind 21-0 after the opening 15 minutes of play, but stormed back to secure a pivotal 35-31 victory over their rivals from Kingston. With Guelph trailing 24-7 at the 25' minute mark, the host Gryphons would start to claw their way back, beginning with a 29th minute try from
Liam Bowman. Two more tries from
Michael Di Lella and
Owen Williams would give the Gryphons a 28-24 lead, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the marquee matchup of the season in OUA men's rugby. The Gaels re-took the lead in the 64th minute on a try from Tao Nichol, but the Gryphons would answer late, with third-year standout,
Owen Williams, recording his second try of the match in the 73rd minute.
Tomas Dallan would split the uprights on the ensuing convert, and the Gryphons would escape with the come-from-behind 35-31 victory. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 2-0 on the season, with four more regular season matches still to play. Queen's, meanwhile, fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Gryphons now have a week off, before returning to action on September 28 for a trip to Peterborough to face the Trent Excalibur.
