GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team suffered an 87-84 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a tightly contested match Friday night (Jan. 12) at the Guelph gryphosn Athletics Centre. With the loss the Gryphons fall to 4-9 while the Thunderwolves improve to 5-8.
Despite the loss the Gryphons received some strong performances for several players, with four eclipsing the 10-point mark. Leading the way was reigning OUA rookie of the year
Dezayne Mingo, who tied his season high in points with his second 30-point game of the campaign. Mingo also added 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Just behind Mingo was teammate
Viktoras Nausedas who totaled 15 points on the night while bringing in 4 rebounds. Finally,
Emmanuel Ansah recorded his fifth double-double of the season (14 pts, 11 rebs) and second-year guard
Shaathon Walker finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds.
After a back-and-forth first half the Gryphons and Thunderwolves headed into the locker room with the visiting team trailing by just a single point. In the third quarter the Gryphons found themselves on the back foot, giving up a 19-6 scoring run to open the period that would see the Thunderwolves enter the final frame with a 12-point advantage. The Gryphons would storm back in the fourth and take the lead with just over three minutes left, but fail to comeplete the comeback after foul trouble allowed Lakehead to retake the lead and hold on until the final whistle.
The Gryphons (4-9) will now shift their focus to the Brock Badgers (6-6) who visit the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre tomorrow night (Jan. 13). Tickets for tomorrow matchup are available online at
