KINGSTON, Ont. – The two-time defending OUA champion, Gryphons men's rugby team, picked up an impressive 34-17 win on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30) over the Queen's Gaels at Nixon Field in Kingston. The Gryphons were led by fourth-year hooker,
David Scollon, who recorded four tries on the day in a memorable road win for the Gryphons, who move to 3-0 on the season, while the Queen's Gaels fall to 2-1.
"Our guys always look forward to the physical test of facing Queen's, and it was certainly a physical test today," says Gryphons head coach,
Cory Hector. "It wasn't our best game in attack, but in terms of defence and line-outs and set pieces, our guys really executed. It was a real team win for our group."
Owen Stirling,
Kobe Faust (2) and
Tomas Dallan all recorded tries to go along with the four tries from
David Scollon. The Gryphons built up a 24-7 lead, and held off a late Queen's charge, with the Gaels trimming the deficit to 24-17 before the Gryphons put the game away with tries from Dallon and Scollon in the 72' and 77' minutes of play. The undefeated Gryphons (3-0) are now halfway through their 6-game OUA regular season schedule, and will look to improve to 4-0 on Friday, October 6 when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 6pm at Varsity Field.
