GUELPH, Ont. - The 2023 Gryphon Rugby Day saw plenty of fireworks on Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon as the Gryphons men's rugby team completed an impressive win over the Trent Excalibur, winning 95-0. The match, which also served as the U of G men's rugby home opener,
was a one-sided affair with the home team firing on all cylinders.

Joshua Ince got the offence started, scoring a game-opening try just three minutes into the match. From that point on it was all Gryphs, scoring 15 tries which came from twelve different U of G student-athletes. Oakville native, and fifth-year (first year of eligibility) wing
Jack Morris found the endzone for the second score of the day. Morris would go on to account for a team-hight three tries followed by OUA All-star centre
Kobe Faust who found scored on a pair of occasions. Faust was also responsible for kicking duties to start the game, splitting the uprights four times to total 18 points on the day. Late in the first half third-year winger
Tomas Dallan took over convert kicking and did not disappoint, going 6-for-7 on convert attempts while also adding a try to his stat line.

Oliver Alpe also scored for the Gryphons in the dominant win.
The Gryphons (2-0) will now take a week off before heading to Kingston to take on their perennial rivals, the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels handed the Gryphons their only loss of the 2022 regular season and the two teams avoided eachother in the playoffs, with Queen's falling to the Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA semifinals. The defending conference champions now boast an impressive 128-12 point differential and will to continue their impressive title defence throughout the rest of the regular season.
