GUELPH, Ont. - Fresh off of a big win to start the 2020 portion of their schedule over the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Guelph Gryphons were looking to follow that up with another victory Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre. Unfortunately, the Queen's Gaels had other ideas, and in the end it was the visiting Gaels coming away with a 2-0 victory over the Gryphons.
With only one point separating the two teams in the very tightly contested OUA standings, there was even less to separate the two teams on the ice in the opening period.
With both teams trying to create in each other's offensive end, both defences stood tall and kept the score 0-0 after one period of play.
However, in the middle frame, the Gaels began to make their push. Finding the back of the net twice in the period, Queen's was able to jump out to a 2-0 advantage over the Gryphons. On the first goal, the visitors were able to get on the board off of a scramble around the Gryphon's goal. Then when a pass came out of the Guelph corner and into the Gryphon's slot, the Gaels were able to convert on the in-tight opportunity as well.
Despite a push from the Gryphons in the final frame of regulation they were unable to break through. Although netting multiple chances in the Queen's zone, in the end the puck wound up staying out of the Gael's net.Â
Making her second straight start of the new year, Aurore Beaulieu made 24 saves on the 26 shots she faced and gave the Gryphons an opportunity to come back all throughout the game.
"I thought we had a tough time mentally today," said Gryphon's head coach Rachel Flanagan. "I don't think there was a lack of effort today, we just struggled with execution."We had our little moments during the game that we just need to start putting together now."
Looking to rebound, the Gryphons will have the week off before returning to the ice on Saturday to play host to the Windsor Lancers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 from the Gryphon Centre.Â
