WHKY Recap: Four Different Goal Scorers Send Gryphons to Victory Over Lancers

GUELPH, Ont. - On a night that saw the Guelph Gryphons celebrate their graduating players, who have already accomplished so much in their time on the University of Guelph campus, including a national championship last season, the Gryphons put forth a total team effort Saturday night as they rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers at the Gryphon Centre.

The home team got goals from four different players throughout the night, while using a strong penalty kill and a solid performance from their net-minder to take down the visitors.

Looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Queen's this past Saturday which snapped Guelph's three game winning streak, the Gryphons initially found themselves trailing after one period of play.

After Windsor managed to take control of the pace and shot clock in the early stages of the contest, Guelph found themselves in need of a response. After successfully killing off back to back penalties, the Gryphon's were sent to the power-play twice, but despite creating pressure, were unable to convert. From that point on, the home side appeared to be establishing control of the game, however, that switched quickly. After a Gryphon's clearing attempt was stopped just shy of the blue-line and swiftly sent towards the Guelph goal where it snuck under the crossbar and into the back of the net to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead after one period of play.

Trailing by a goal entering the second, the Gryphons really began to turn it on. Holding nearly all of the offensive play in the Windsor zone, Guelph found the equalizer just over three minutes into the frame. Stephanie GavaBringing the puck into the Lancer's end, Gabrielle Smyth let go of a wrist-shot that fooled Windsor goalie Molly Jenkins. Already buzzing, the Gryphons then established their first lead of the game minutes later. Working below the goal line Karli Shell found Kristen Jay on the far post, who easily buried her third of the season into an open target. Guelph continued to press throughout the frame, but Jenkins managed to turn away the rest of the Gryphon's chances.

Despite the intermission break, that did now slow down the Gryphon's momentum as the third period began. Just a minute into the third, a shot from the point bounced off a Lancer's skate and right on to the stick of Hannah Tait and she found the back of the net off of the pinball play.

Holding their 3-1 lead throughout the period, Miranda Lantz then went on to seal the Guelph victory in the final minute, finding the back of the empty net from her own blue-line.

In goal for the Gryphons, Aurore Beaulieu turned aside 25 of Windsor's 26 shots. Molly Jenkins meanwhile made 34 saves for the road team.

Winners of four of their last five games, the Gryphons will look to continue that trend on Wednesday when they play host to the York Lions. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 from the Gryphon Centre
