WSCR: Gryphons Suffer First Loss of Season with 1-0 Road Defeat at McMaster

HAMILTON, Ont. – With nearly 70 percent of the regular season in the books, the undefeated streak for the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team has finally come to an end. On Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, the McMaster Marauders handed the No. 9-ranked Gryphons a 1-0 loss. The lone goal of the match came just before half when Marauders' fourth-year forward Stephanie Roberts headed home off a corner to give the hosts all three points. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 7-1-3 on the season and now sit one point back of Western for top spot in the OUA West standings. McMaster meanwhile improves to 5-3-3 and sit 3rd in the standings, six points back of Guelph.

The goal from McMaster's Stephanie Roberts in the 44th minute marked just the second goal conceded all season by the Gryphons, with the other coming in a 1-1 tie with York back on August 29. The Gryphons' best chance on Sunday afternoon came 30 minutes in when Alana MacLean chipped a ball over McMaster's keeper, only to see it hit the cross bar and stay out.

Late in the 2nd half, the Gryphons' closest call to finding an equalizer was an attempt from striker Victoria Hinchliffe, who was able to dribble around the keeper but could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

The Gryphons will return home to the Gryphon Soccer Complex next Friday (Oct. 5) for a home matchup with the Waterloo Warriors.

Gryphon Take
"That was a really good game, with both teams trading the balance of momentum. The margins were thin but we were able to generate enough opportunities to score, but it just didn't happen for us. Our girls played a strong match and put themselves in position to win." – head coach Shayne Campbell

The Record
Guelph is 7-1-3
