WSCR: Gryphons Rebound in 2-0 Win Over Waterloo

Hinchliffe and Holtz Score, While Brenneman Keeps Clean Sheet

GUELPH, Ont. – There haven't been many blemishes for the reigning OUA champion Guelph Gryphons soccer team so far in 2018. But after suffering a rare loss last week, Guelph was hungry to return to its winning ways. The Gryphons put in an excellent performance in defeating the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 on School Day at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday afternoon.

Victoria Hinchliffe and Jenna Holtz scored for Guelph, which secured three big points a week after losing its first match of the season 1-0 to McMaster in Hamilton. Veteran goalkeeper Libby Brenneman came up with a couple of big saves to earn her seventh clean sheet in seven matches started.

Keeper Libby Brenneman clears. She has not allowed a goal in 2018.

Hinchliffe got the breakthrough for the Gryphons in the 22nd minute after some tremendous work from third-year midfielder Danielle Sauve, who had one of her best performances of the season. Sauve worked tirelessly to force a turnover in the Waterloo end and then sent an excellent feed into the area, which Hinchliffe calmly finished.

It was the Guelph native's 10th of the season, tying her for the U SPORTS lead with Jenny Wolever of Queen's and Ottawa's Emma Lefebvre.

Holtz, a Tacoma, Washington native who has been a massive addition to the midfield of the defending OUA champions, opened her account as a Gryphon when she curled in a beautiful free kick over Waterloo keeper Madison McDonald in the 64th minute, effectively putting the match to bed.

The Gryphons were in control much of the game but had to contend with a few pushes from Waterloo, especially right before the half when the visitors came close to a crucial equalizer while down 1-0.

Guelph had scored just one goal in the previous three matches, going 1-1-1 during that stretch.

Turning point
Guelph was on the front foot most of the first half and surely deserved its 1-0 lead. But Waterloo had a sequence right before the halftime whistle that could have dramatically altered the match. The Warriors had a flurry in the Gryphons' box and Brenneman appeared to get her fingertips on a header attempt that hit the crossbar and went straight down. With the ball on the goal line waiting for a touch from a Warrior, Brenneman desperately cleared it to preserve the 1-0 scoreline after 45 minutes, as well as her incredible record of not conceding a goal yet in over 630 minutes of play. She was one of the heroes of the 2017 championship run and looked the part again Friday.

Gryphon Take
"We really focused this week on the importance of this game for us. Anytime you lose, you want to show that you can rebound. We started very brightly and created several chances. And then after Sauve pressured their fullback and won the ball, she slotted the ball across and Hinch was there for a nice finish. That's been eluding us lately and it settled us." – head coach Shayne Campbell

The Record
Guelph is 8-1-3.
