FH: Gryphons Beat Queen's 2-1 and Lose 1-0 to Toronto

MacMillan Scores Two in Win, While Offence Stalls Against Varsity Blues

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LONDON/GUELPH, Ont. – There aren't many breaks in the OUA field hockey schedule. The Guelph Gryphons had one of those weekends with a Saturday matchup on the road against the Queen's Gaels and then a Sunday return home to take on the undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues. Guelph got the job done in London, defeating Queen's 2-1. But the 2017 OUA finalists couldn't get the offence going and fell 1-0 to Toronto at Varsity Field Sunday.

The final scoreline wasn't indicative of the Gryphons' play. They were dominant in possession, with most of the game played inside the Gaels' 25-yardline. The opportunities were plentiful and captain Katherine MacMillan was able to capitalize, scoring both of Guelph's goals.

FH v Toronto, Sept. 23, 2018
The Gryphons defend a Toronto penalty corner

The first came from a penalty corner by Rebecca Plouffe, with MacMillan depositing the rebound off the Queen's goalkeeper's pads in the 14th minute. Despite all of the Guelph possession, the Gaels tied it up before the break, setting the stage for MacMillan's winner in the 44th minute. Kayla Magarelli found and open MacMillan and she touched it over the line to secure the win.

In the latest installment of the intense rivalry with Toronto, Guelph picked up where it left off the previous match and had a lot of the ball. But the Gryphons simply couldn't finish and a Varsity Blues goal in the 12th minute proved too difficult to overcome.

Guelph had a short bench for the final 20 minutes of play as two players were forced to leave after taking blows to the face.

The Gryphons will have a chance to rebound with a busy three-game schedule next weekend in Kingston, ON.

Gryphon Take
"We are carrying a large percentage of the play but need to work on our first touches and capitalizing on our opportunities. We have to be patient and not get so anxious and the goals will come." – head coach Michelle Turley

The Record
Guelph is 2-1-1.
