GUELPH, Ont. – They are the matches that the Guelph Gryphons women's rugby team lives for. When it's all on the line, the two-time defending OUA champions are at their best. And they came up with another big performance on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. No. 3 Guelph took on a tough Brock Badgers team and ultimately pulled away in a one-sided 97-12 win in the OUA semi-final.
Emmanuela Jada led the way with three tries, while
Amara Hill,
Talia Hoffman, and
Alexandra Everett had two each. Ing scored the final try of the match for the Gryphons and added nine converts, as the side reached the OUA gold-medal game for the 11th time in a row.
The defending champions got off to a blistering start as Jada touched down in both the first and fifth minutes.
Madison Brattan converted both tries and Guelph was up 14-0 in a hurry.
The Gryphons sustain the attack against Brock
The Russell Division leaders didn't back down and responded with their own try from Niamh Haughey in the seventh minute. Haughey added her second of the match but at 19-12, the Gryphons began to pull away by scoring 24 consecutive points before halftime. It began with a try from
Erika Barton and continued as Everett,
Jacinta Addai-Sarfo, and Hoffman all touched down to send Guelph into the half up 43-12.
It was more one-way traffic in the second half with Guelph scoring the next 54 points on eight consecutive tries, seven of them converted successfully.
The Gryphons, who were without star fly half
Julia Schell for the semi-final, will play the winner of Saturday's match between the Queen's Gaels and McMaster Marauders.
Gryphon Take
"We were able to adapt well. At first, it was very silent and we realized that to win a game, you have to talk to each other. We saw where the threats were. The communication helps us in the long run."
"Our team motto is 'As One.' We do everything together. We win together or lose together, as one."
– fourth-year centre Emmanuela Jada
"Brock is a quality side. We had to make a few adjustments in the breakdown. We weren't getting clean ball and they put a lot of pressure on our 9, which slows down our attack. I was really proud of the girls, they made adjustments in the first 15-20 minutes to clean up the rucks and protect the ball better."
"They set some pretty loft goals, as we do every year. But they're attainable goals, it's not out of reach at any point. They've reached one, which is to be in the OUA final. This week, they'll have to work hard. It's going to be really tough battle next week. We tried to get the bench in so we could get a lot of people in the game and understand the pressure of the playoffs." –
head coach Colette McAuley
